This will be Wellingborough Lions Ninth Annual Organ Concert with Nicholas Martin, former resident organist at Turners Merry-Go-Round, Northampton, and Wickstead Park, Kettering and for lovers of popular music, this will be another outstanding evening. For further information about Nick, visit his website by clicking here.
Nick's ambition from a young age was to play at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool and his dad Roy contacted the management of Blackpool Tower in Jan. 1981. He explained of his son's ambition to play the Tower Ballroom Wurlitzer organ and incredibly, Nick's dream was realised in March 1981, when he was accepted as a member of the team of organists. An ambition achieved at only 17 years of age! He subsequently played there seven days a week, on the famous Wurlitzer organ, during the 1981 and 1982 seasons.
So it was, that in April 1983 Nick started another phase of his music career by becoming the resident theatre organist at the new "Turner's" Entertainments Centre in Northampton. The organ he was to play for so many years was one of the finest ever to be shipped here from the U.S. Wurlitzer factory and was originally installed in the Paramount, later Odeon, Cinema Newcastle in 1931 - but acquired for duties at "Turner's" in 1982.
It was to be a long and fruitful partnership at the Northamptonshire venue because Nick continued working there right up until the centre closed in 2004.
Despite Nicholas having entertained audiences around the country for over thirty years, he still rates The Castle as one of the his favourite venues and one which he loves returning to. Unfortunately with no pipe organ at the theatre, Nick will be playing his Technics electronic organ but close your eyes, soak in the atmosphere and you can allow yourself to be transported back to Turner's without leaving your seat.
The club will be attending to support our fellow Lions from "across the border" - Northampton border, that is and we intend organising a block booking if we have enough interested in coming along.
If you wish to join the party from Newport Pagnell & Olney Lions Club, please drop a note via the contact page to order your tickets and we will add you to our booking (block or otherwise).
